Sky Day–today, September 21! (and tomorrow too)

Oakton is participating in the international Sky Day Project–a citizen scientist/citizen art project going on RIGHT NOW!!

Today (Thursday) and Tomorrow (Friday), every one in Oakton’s community (kids, especially!) is invited to:

  1. Take Pictures of the Sky (Only the Sky! no building, people, mountains, nothing else!)
  2. Tweet them using BOTH OF THESE hashtags: #SkyDayProject #oakton OR post them to Oakton’s Facebook page and we’ll Tweet it for you OR email them to oaktonpta.president@gmail.com & I’ll tweet them to Oakton’s Twitter Account
  3. Check out the pictures from all over the world on skydayproject.org
  4. Visit Adler Planetarium this weekend where the pictures will also be displayed all weekend long.

DACA presentation at ETHS on Sept. 26

A note from Oakton PTA president Alicia Aiken, and ETHS parent Rachel Sollinger:

English:

On September 26th from 6-7pm, National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) will be at the ETHS Welcome Center (room E112) to do a presentation for DACA recipients and their families about their rights and the implications of Trump’s DACA rescission. This event is for the entire Evanston community.

In the meantime, any DACA recipient whose work permit expires BEFORE March 5, 2018 may apply for a renewal BEFORE October 5, 2017. Because Trump gave this group JUST one month, immigration organizations have quickly organized workshops to help families complete these forms, compile applications and supporting documentation. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to organize a workshop locally.

This public google doc contains a list of DACA Renewal workshops staffed by immigration attorneys and BIA-approved specialists: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LK0Ht24kMemfmrWAVYqEyalT7kmgWtc04qkfzuT-bDY/edit?usp=sharing

Please share this link with teachers, counselors, churches, etc. (We are working on translating it.) Also see/print this event flier in Spanish and short “Know Your Rights” flier, in Spanish and English.

The spreadsheet only includes workshops within an hour drive of Evanston. It is not an exhaustive list and will grow as more workshops are scheduled. Most offer free legal services, a few have a fee (they are noted). Most require pre-registration.

Each renewal application costs $495. The Mexican Consulate is offering financial help to Mexican citizens and there are a number of other possible sources of funds listed on the google document. ICIRR is keeping an updated list as well. That link is on the google doc.

Individuals seeking DACA renewal will need to bring a number of documents with them to any renewal clinic or workshop. The documents needed are listed on the last page of the google doc. Because there is limited time and a limited number of workshops, we need to make sure this information gets into the hands of those that need it ASAP.

Please feel free to forward any questions to Rachel Sollinger (rachelsollinger@gmail.com) or to Miguel Ruiz at EPL. (mruiz@cityofevanston.org)
